VPRS 4315 All Jurisdiction Receipt Butts

Successive Instructions to Clerk of Courts established a responsibility to maintain various records of account. This included an All Jurisdictions Receipt Book. Initially the Instructions stated that receipts "...for moneys paid into court are to be given from this book, and any other for of receipt in such cases is strictly forbidden. Particulars should be inserted in the butt of the receipt so that the butt and receipt may exactly correspond with the entry in the suitors' cash book." By 1915 clerks were instructed to ensure that both the butt and receipt should clearly record the number of the case for which the money has been paid, the names of the parties to the case, the initials and nae of the person by whom or on whose behalf the payment was made and details of what the payment is about. By 1939 the clerk was required to issue a receipt from this book for all moneys received except in cases where other receipts existed. Cancelled receipts were not to be removed from the book.
