Dataset of historical dendronyms in Trentino

This dataset contains geohistorical information on historical place names related to plants and trees in Trentino. Place names data have been collected manually using Qgis from Hapsburg military maps and cadastral maps in 19th century, and Italia military maps of 20th century. It provides a valuable resource for research on local history of ecology and landscape. The data are analysed in Buffoni D., Gabellieri N., Gestri F., Sarzotti E., From Place Names to Environmental Resources:Geohistorical Sources and Historical GIS in the Analysis of 19th-Century Alpine Woodland Toponyms, in the Proceedings of the International Scientific Symposium UNGEGN “Toponyms as a means of expressing identification, location, possession, belonging, division, and respect for peoples’ cultures”, in press. The dataset has been developed within the framework of the project PRIN 2022 “Bridging geography and history of woodlands: analysing mountain wooded landscapes through multiple sources and historical GIS” (2022EKECST), funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU (CUP E53D23010170006).
