In recent years, biofilm research has placed much emphasis on fundamental investigations using multispecies biofilms models, by avoiding the usage of artificial nutrient-rich medium, favoring more relevant simulated natural occurring low-nutrient medium sources. However, due to a much slower biofilm development under low-nutrient growth environments, natural media are at times supplemented with an additional carbon source with the purpose of increasing the rate of biofilm formation. Here, we investigated the impact of sodium citrate supplementation on freshwater biofilm community structure, and network interaction by employing 16s rRNA gene sequencing.
