Running title:Loneliness Self-view in Older Adults

This study analyses the role loneliness self-view plays in predicting depressive state among older adults in a social context in which they live with other people and are involved in social activities. The final sample comprised 329 participants, aged between 55 and 90 years old. The hypotheses were tested using hierarchical regression analysis. Results revealed that when biographical, emotional and self-view factors interact to explain the variance in depression in a context of social support, gender, education, feelings of loneliness and self-view can explain up to 53.2% of the variance in the participants’ depressive state. Our study suggests that loneliness self-view is a conditioning factor of both the subjective perception of loneliness and depressive state. Introducing services such as therapies to moderate self-view could help to change the self-view of lonely people by reducing the effects of loneliness and improving their quality of life.
