Naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber) are able to survive prolonged periods of hypoxia. To do this, they enter a hypometabolic state through the coordinated use of various molecular mechanisms including microRNA-mediated gene regulation. microRNAs are known to regulate translation by targeting mRNA for degradation or temporary storage. Next-generation sequencing was used to assess changes in microRNA expression in the kidney of control and hypoxic Heterocephalus glaber.
