Climate change is altering the structure and functioning of river ecosystems worldwide. In mountain rivers, systematic changes in aquatic invertebrate diversity have been observed as a result of glacier retreat, yet the effects of ice loss on other biological taxa and whole ecosystem functions are less understood. Using data from mountain rivers spanning six countries, on four continents, along a gradient of glacier retreat, we study decomposition rates and complement this by measuring abundance of a fungal cellulose decomposing gene Cellobiohydrolyse I, in addition to profiling the associated fungal community.
