• An important basis is the statistics of the German Federal Employment Agency • The work-route matrix shows the commuting movement of employees subject to social insurance contributions between their place of residence and their place of work • Self-employed persons and civil servants are not included in these statistics • Commuters are shown as a total and separately for men and women • Annual update Definition of commuters • All persons whose place of work or training is in a municipality other than their municipality of residence are considered commuters across municipality boundaries • A distinction is made between commuters in and commuters out according to the direction of the commuter travel • Persons who travel from their municipality of residence to another municipality for work/training purposes are considered “commuters out” • If, on the other hand, the same commuters are considered from the point of view of the target communities in which the work or training facilities are located, one speaks of “commuters in”
