Introduced in April 2017, deposits taken on Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST's) have to be protected in a Government-approved Tenancy Deposit Protection (TDP) scheme. The value of deposits protected under the TDP scheme has increased annually since it began. As of April 2019, there was more than 4.4 billion British pounds (GBP) of deposits protected in England and Wales.
