ReNO4 crystallizes in the tetragonal I4_1/a space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of four ReNO4 sheets oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Re3+ is bonded to four equivalent O2- atoms to form ReO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent NO4 tetrahedra. All Re–O bond lengths are 1.76 Å. N5+ is bonded to four equivalent O2- atoms to form distorted NO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four equivalent ReO4 tetrahedra. All N–O bond lengths are 2.15 Å. O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one Re3+ and one N5+ atom.
