The NPP satellite was successfully launched on October 28, 2011. It is outfitted with five scientific instruments: the Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), the Clouds and Earth Radiant Energy System (CERES), the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS). Using new observational data collected by these five instruments, scientists can gain insights into the dynamics of long-term climate patterns and improve the precision of short-term weather forecasts. Additionally, this mission enables the continuation of 30 key long-term datasets that NASA has been consistently tracking, including ozone layer monitoring, land cover, ice sheet coverage, and other relevant measurements. The NPP satellite is managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
