Accuracy as a Professional Obligation: Technical, Analytical, and Operational Judgment Under Realistic Doubt

Professional accuracy is commonly treated as evidence of competence, diligence, and sound method. This paper argues that, in decision-critical work, it is also a professional obligation. Where others rely on technical, analytical, or operational representations to approve, build, regulate, operate, or accept risk, avoidable inaccuracy may transfer loss to people who neither created the representation nor could detect its defects. The central problem is not uncertainty itself, but reliance invited without accuracy and residual uncertainty being established, bounded, or disclosed to the decision burden. The paper develops an engineering model of this obligation. It does not enter philosophical inquiry or propose a new theory. Instead, it extracts candidate rules from established philosophical formulations that provide close analogues for outcome correspondence, role-based responsibility, preventable harm, public reliance, and correction. These rules are structured as a premise grammar and evaluated against legislation, regulation, professional standards, duty-of-care obligations, and a worked 2003 North American blackout case. The worked example evaluates the effectiveness of the accuracy obligation as executed in the historical pathway against a matched counterfactual in which a suitable obligation is maintained at each event knot. It tests whether earlier recognition, more accurate capability and headroom estimates, narrower diagnostic search, and timely correction preserve intervention opportunity and reduce the response required, modeled with Precision Techonomics (PT, . The counterfactual is conditional: it does not establish that accuracy alone would have prevented the wider event, but tests whether maintaining the obligation would have produced a different operational outcome. The paper provides a rule-based accuracy model, realistic-doubt standard, and non-punitive method that tests the representation before judging the person.
