Heavy rail grew into the largest rail rolling stock segment in the United States in 2018, overtaking commuter rail in 2017. In total, rail amounted for over 1.7 billion U.S. dollars of rolling stock capital expenditure in 2018. With over 802 million U.S. dollars spent on heavy rail, it made up 46.8 percent of the rail spending.
