This dataset contains historical operational GFS forecast and analysis files from 2016 to 2022. These files are initialized at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC daily, and run for multiple hours. Additionally, it includes the raw observational data used for initializing the analyses and forecasts. The dataset expands over time to incorporate more historical data and observations. The data is stored in zipped Zarr archives and can be opened via xarray. This dataset was developed to facilitate the creation of a dataset similar to the one utilized in the 2022 Kiesler et al. paper, which employs graph networks for weather forecasting. Usage of this dataset is restricted under U.S. government licenses, with no additional restrictions.
