VPRS 12342 Register of Firms

This series was created under the provisions of Section 16 of the Registration of Firms Act 1892 (subsequently replaced by Part 2 of the Partnership Act 1915) by the Office of the Registrar General and the Office of the Registrar of Titles (VA 862) as a register of `all the firms and the firm name of persons' required to be registered. According to the provisions of the Act, each firm or individual conducting business within Victoria under a trading name not comprising the full given names of the individuals or partners concerned, was required to register the firm name. The term 'firm' was changed to 'business name' in 1927 when the Business Names Act 1926 came into operation.The registers detail the following information:* firm name and registration number* type of business* place or places of business* full name, usual residence and other occupation of the person or persons carrying out the business* date of commencement of the business if this occurred after the proclamation of the act.Entries in the registers also detail changes to the registration and the date of its cessation or striking off.The Act further provided that each name be registered through the lodgement of a statement containing the above information. This statement and subsequent documentation lodged relating to changes in this detail was attached to a file pertaining to the registration. These volumes also record the receipt of this statement and documentation and its placement on file.Accordingly this series controlled the files. The files were destroyed under authorised disposal arrangements. (see VPRS 933).No further bound registers were created after registration number 38,000 in January 1927. All new registrations and amendments to existing registrations were made on a register in a card format (see VPRS 12343). However, details relating to documents lodged and added to the files, were added to the entries of this series until at least 1930.
