Megalops atlanticus, or tarpon, are primarily found in coastal waters on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This fish is a gamefish in America and the commercial sale of tarpon is prohibited. The Megalops atlanticus mitochondrial genome was sequenced by the University of Tokyo to study the phylogenetic relationships between a number of different fish species.
