YouthViolence 2007 is a large-scale youth survey on exposure to violence and abuse among final-year upper secondary school students in Norway, carried out by NOVA. At the time, YouthViolence 2007 was the only population-based youth survey in Norway addressing this topic. The survey has since been repeated in the same age group in 2015, and among students at all levels of upper secondary school in 2023.
The YouthViolence surveys map a wide range of different forms of violence and abuse, including young people’s exposure to psychological and physical violence from parents, experiences as witnesses, sexual abuse within and outside the family, and violence in peer contexts. Furthermore, the survey distinguishes between experiences in childhood and experiences during adolescence.
The data are of high quality and have been used as a basis for numerous scientific and popular science publications, as well as in governmental policy documents. The data collection design builds on NOVA’s other large youth surveys, such as “Young in Norway” and “Ungdata”. The Ministry of Children and Equality commissioned and funded the YouthViolence 2007 survey.
