资源简介:
This report presents the results of the analysis of existing and proposed impacts to National Register eligible site 38SU182/208 at Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter County, South Carolina. Due to continued use of Passageway and Sugar Sand roads that skirt the northern and eastern edge of the site, the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office requested that an analysis be performed to determine if continued use of the roads would adversely impact the site, and if the site was being adversely impacted, to make recommendations for avoiding future impacts. In addition, Shaw Air Force base was interested in determining if removal of damaged sand pines from the site would adversely affect the deposits found there. A similar situation regarding damaged sand pines occurs at 38SU106, where one locus (Locus C) was determined eligible for the National Register. During a field visit to both sites by South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office’s Chuck Cantley, it was determined the two roads can continue to be used with their current alignment and the pine trees can be removed from 38SU182/208 using methods outlined by Shaw Air Force Base’s Forester. It was also determined that pine trees could be removed from 38SU106 given the methods they presented and due to the relatively buried location of the artifacts at Locus C. This report provides a summary of previous fieldwork at 38SU182/208 and 38SU106, a discussion of the current fieldwork at 38SU182/208, Shaw’s proposed method of tree removal, and our observations and conclusions regarding the previously described impacts.
