These files deal with such matters as acquisition of land, major construction and reconstruction, major deviations, survey and design of highways and the taking over of control from local councils by the Department.The files contain very little actual policy, being largely concerned with policy implementation.A full paper listing is available.Main Roads File Classification SchemeMany series of files which were created by the Department of Main Roads are registered by means of a classified registration system.These file numbers are constructed using a fixed number to indicate in which council area the road referred to is located. These council numbers are used in various series of files (e.g. Council correspondence files, Freeways correspondence files, State highways correspondence files). The council number is preceded by a highway number in the State highways correspondence files and a freeway number in the Freeways correspondence files. It is followed by a decimal point and then by a series of numbers which have a subject meaning.The filing system is also unusual. The files are arranged first in numerical order by freeway, highway or council number, then by council number (if it is a freeway or highway file). The council number is followed by a decimal point. Within a council number the files are filed initially numerically by the first digit after the decimal point. Subsequent numbers following the first decimal place are treated as separate whole numbers, not as decimal places. e.g.392.12 will precede392.1107 which will precede392.34File numbers which include letters. such as 392RL27 are filed at the end of the sequence for that number.
