Novel HPAI H5N1 viruses isolated from 15 unhealthy black swans in Shanghai, China, 2024. From November 8 to 19, 2024, a total of 15 clinically symptomatic black swans were identified in the Chongming Natural Reserve (31°25′ to 31°38′ N, 121°53′ to 122°0′ E). Several swans exhibited signs of lethargy and vigorous head shaking. Oropharyngeal and cloacal swab samples were collected from all the unhealthy black swans. Viral RNA was extracted, and reverse-transcribed into cDNA using the Uni12 primer. The whole genome of H5N1 viruses was obtained.
