The role of the register was to facilitate planning of lessons over the year and to demonstrate to the teacher's superiors that the syllabus was covered.Each teacher maintained a programme and lessons register for their class. The programme register covered an academic year. The top of the page sets out the name of the school, the grade, the dates of the terms, the average age of the pupils, the name of the teacher.The programme is set out in pre-printed pages. At the left-hand edge of each page is a column marked with week numbers. With slight variations from year to year, the weekly programme is set out under the following subjects: Reading, Arithmetic, Form (or Grammar), Colour (or Geography), Object Lessons, Scripture Lessons, Drawing, Vocal Music, Other Subjects.
