Whirling disease is an ecologically and economically debilitating disease of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss caused by the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. In this study, we are focusing on a promising Whirling disease-resistant rainbow trout strain developed in the Gunnison River, Colorado, which can play an instrumental role in helping rainbows recover from the scourge of whirling disease. We analyzed the genomes and transcriptomes of this resistant strain after challenging it with M. cerebralis at different time points. The results can help to understand the resistance mechanism of this strain, which in turn can help in controlling this disease in North America.
