VPRS 4105 Confidential Correspondence Indexed Outward Letter Book And Register

The volume in this series performs three separate functions. The first is as a register (1840 - 1844) to the confidential correspondence received by the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District primarily from the Colonial Secretary or the Governor in Sydney or from the judiciary regarding the establishment of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in the Port Phillip District. Details given are the progressive number, the date, from whom the letter was received and their residence, a summary of the subject of the letter and details of any referral. The volume also served as an outward letter book for confidential correspondence (1840 - 1851). The transcripts have the date and registered number, details of the addressee and the text of the letter. Correspondence consists of reports to the Colonial Secretary and drafts of memoranda on such subjects as District Councils. Other correspondence is addressed to local persons seeking to discover whether they would be willing to serve as Justices of the Peace in their districts. A small portion of the volume is devoted to an index of the outwards correspondence.
