Colour Field: Paint as Light Series

The work was selected by Jane Devery and Serena Bentley, curators of contemporary art at The NGV for the Kaleidoscopic Turn Exhibition to explore current tendencies in the approach to colour in contemporary practice. The work subsequently entered the permanent collection after peer review by acquisition panels, trustees and Director. The work offers the viewer an encounter with colour as a contemplative experience. The work extends a series of monochromes in time and space over 10 panels. It explores colour and touch as experience, colour as code, colour saturation and time of experience and how this affects perception and encourages attentive looking. Touch as mark /structure colour saturation become apparent. The work questions the stability of colour as a fixed culturally constructed code. It suggests that colour sensation and meaning shifts as the viewer engages with the work over time. The work in this exhibition contributes to knowledge of colour field , optical and kinetic impulses in local and international Contemporary Art Practice.
