Mapping deforestation frontiers in Central America's tropical moist forests

This repository contains the derived geospatial products and source data supporting the manuscript “Mapping deforestation frontiers in Central America’s tropical moist forests.” The study classifies deforestation-frontier dynamics across Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama from 1990 to 2023 using a 1.5 × 1.5 km analytical grid. The deposit includes GeoTIFF maps of the three frontier typologies spatiotemporal pattern, development stage, and deforestation severity as well as the final frontier-archetype classification. It also includes the numerical source data underlying the graphs and charts presented in Figures 2–5, together with the cell-level analytical dataset used for the covariate comparisons and the Bayesian multinomial analysis reported in Table 1. The cell-level dataset contains records for all six archetype classes before selected analytical exclusions and includes country, archetype membership, spatial coordinates, terrain, accessibility, population, agricultural suitability, protection status, and forest-context variables. The accompanying README provides the file inventory, raster class codes, variable definitions, units, data-processing steps, analytical exclusions, software versions, and information on the external datasets used in the study.
