Previously, we reported that targeting roots of duckweed which were inoculated with environmental microbes and were co-cultured for a certain period as a microbial source, enables isolation of wide variety of microbes including rarely cultivated bacterial groups representing Verrucomicrobiota (hereafter referred to as duckweed-microbes co-cultivation system) (Microbes Environ. Vol. 33, No. 4, 402-406, 2018). In this project, we analyzed the microbial communities inhabiting the root and frond of the plant and medium in the duckweed-microbes co-cultivation system to obtain information why this system is effective for isolating the rarely cultivated microbes. In addition, the effect of nitrate concentration on the microbial communities formed in the samples of duckweed-microbes co-cultivation system was also confirmed to get the data for improving the system.
