The history of medicine has long been considered an auxiliary discipline; however, contemporary medical education recognizes its value in shaping core professional competencies. This article examines how the study of historical medical knowledge, practices, and personalities contributes to the development of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, cultural sensitivity, and evidence-based decision-making among future healthcare professionals. Using an analytical and descriptive methodology, this research synthesizes existing theoretical frameworks and educational models that integrate the history of medicine into competency-based curricula. The findings indicate that historical perspectives enhance students’ understanding of the dynamic nature of medical knowledge, strengthen professional identity, and foster a holistic view of patient care. Furthermore, studying historical mistakes, breakthroughs, and ethical dilemmas enables learners to better navigate modern clinical uncertainties. The article concludes that the history of medicine plays an indispensable role in developing well-rounded medical professionals equipped for contemporary healthcare challenges.
