Paleomagnetic data on worlwide CAMP rocks

The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), precisely dated to around 201.3-201.5 Ma, is represented by intrusive rocks (dykes and sills) and flow sequences. The CAMP lava sequences in North America and Morocco are exclusively of normal polarity, and the oldest lava in those regions directly overlay sediment layers of reversed polarity associated with the E23r chron. Some reversed-polarity intrusive rocks, especially from South America and Sierra Leone in Africa, could have been emplaced during that chron. All available paleomagnetic results indicate an emplacement within a short time interval, consistent with high-quality geochronological results. However, the reversed polarity was found mainly in South America and NW Africa, where some of the oldest radio-isotopic ages for the CAMP were detected, indicating a possible northward migration of magmatism.
