Lake Pontchartrain SAV survey data at five north shore locations (2000)

SAV (submerged aquatic vegetation) was surveyed in August 2000 at seven locations along the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

Transect survey data are included in the dataset along with shapefiles of Lake Pontchartrain.

The line intercept method (Gertz 1984) was used to survey SAV at the sites to determine annual and depth variations in areal coverage.  Survey transects were located at 7, 14, 28, 32, and 49 meters from the east end of the 50 meters of designated shoreline at each site.    Transects were perpendicular to the shoreline and extended over 200 m into the Lake.  Vegetation intercepted by the transect line and the corresponding length covered by each species was recorded in centimeters while snorkeling.  Water depth was measured along the transects at 3-m intervals starting from shore.  The depth measurements were adjusted to mean lake levels, and vegetation intercepts placed in six depth interval categories: 0 to 0.3 m; 0.3 to 0.6 m; 0.6 to 0.9 m; 0.9 to 1.2 m; 1.2 to 1.5 m; and 1.5 to 2.0 m.
