We systematically searched all peer-reviewed papers published prior to October 2020 that tested soil gross N immobilization rates using the Web of Science and Google Scholar Database and searched for references within these articles. Our search also included papers summarized in formerly published gross N immobilization rates meta-analyses. The key terms to screen the articles were ‘gross nitrogen immobilization’, ‘gross ammonium immobilization’, ‘gross nitrate immobilization’, gross nitrogen assimilation, or ‘soil gross nitrogen transformations’. We followed the guidelines of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) to perform the literature search. The following criteria were used for collecting the data: 1) GI, INH4, and INO3 were measured using soil taken from the surface layer (top 20 cm), 2) The majority of incubational lengths for GI, INH4, and INO3 range from 24 to 48 h, and 3) Gross N transformation rates were estimated with the 15N isotopic pool dilution technique and tracing model. In total, 274 papers were met these criteria and the dataset was created by assembling 1966 observations representing data across different ecosystem types.
