Characterization of Staphylococcus sp. EMCR19 nov.: a novel species within the Staphylococcus aureus complex isolated from a human foot infection. Genomic characterization of Staphylococcus sp. EMCR19

The strain was obtained from routine diagnostics cultures in the Erasmus Medical Center. A regular wound culture was performed of an infected foot wound of an outpatient traveler. The patient reported the infection started shortly after an injury his foot on a beach in Indonesia (figure 1). He reported being exposed to seawater after the cutting incident and denied any animal contact during his trip.After one day of incubation, the blood agar, MacConkey agar and Choc agar showed three morphologically distinct colonies involving strain EMCR19 Streptococcus group A and S. aureus.
