Features of the gut microbiome of saiga (Saiga tatarica) in captive conditions and natural habitat

This study aims to characterize and compare the gut microbiome composition and functional potential of the saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) living in natural habitats and under captive conditions. Using shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we explore taxonomic diversity, dominant microbial taxa, and metabolic pathways associated with host diet, environment, and health. The research provides insight into how captivity influences gut microbial communities, with implications for saiga conservation, reintroduction programs, and overall understanding of host-microbiome interactions in wild ungulates.
