Patent applicants and applications; industries/sectors (SBI93) 2000-2008

This table contains data on the number of patent applicants and applications from the Netherlands at the European Patent Office (EPO) and NL Patent Centre, a division of Agency NL (NLOC). Patents may be granted to companies, universities, institutions, individuals or other entities as long as the invention meets the conditions for patentability. To qualify for a patent, an invention must be new, iventive and admissible for industrial application. Whether an invention meets these criteria is tested by a patent office such as the EPO or the NLOC. The patent office will eventually accept or reject the application. The data on patent applicants and applications are broken down in this table by industry/sector in which the applicant company operates. Classification by industry is based on the 1993 Standard Business Classification (SBI'93). The figures provide an indication of which industries in Dutch society are (most) innovative. Data available from 2000 onwards. Amended as of 29 March 2013. Due to a calculation error, the number of patent applications to the EPO of the C mining industry was not correct in 2007. This has been corrected in this version of the table (was 64; it’s 113 now). This table has been discontinued due to the transition to Standard Business Classification 2008 (SBI 2008).
