Fifteen manos and metates from the Talega Site (CA-ORA-907) were submitted for
pollen or phytolith analysis. This multi-occupation, habitation site yielded radiocarbon ages that
ranged in age from 500 to at least 9,620 BP, while dates from the third pedostratigraphic unit
ranged from cal BP 4370-3800. Older features from the fifth pedostratigraphic unit are
estimated to range in age from 6,000 to 8,000 years old (Personal communication, Michael
Tuma, July 27, 2004). Seven of these groundstone tools were selected for pollen and starch
analysis, while the remaining eight were examined for phytoliths.
