To investigate the impact of methionine supplementation on the gut microbiota in poultry, especially the laying hen, the FIMM (in vitro microbial culture) technique was applied to concurrently culture digesta from the complete small intestines and ceca of four healthy laying hens (aged 25 weeks), using individually reagent grade L-methionine (LRL), feed grade DL-methionine (D-methionine 50%, L-methionine 50%; LDL), feed grade L-methionine 95% (LL95), feed grade L-methionine 100% (LL100), and without any treatment, just the poultry digesta (LCONT).
