Road Weather Information System (RWIS)

The Idaho Transportation Department's (ITD) Road Weather information System (RWIS) sites are installed along major highways to gather real-time data on weather and road surface conditions to improve winter maintenance decision-making and increase motorist safety. The systems use specialized equipment to monitor air and pavement temperatures, precipitation, and other factors, transmitting this information to a central system for analysis and action, such as the timely application of deicing chemicals. Real-time views of weather conditions through the RWIS sites is available through the Idaho 511 travel information service website and mobile application.
