Methanogens play a key role in biogas production and therefore, they were the focus of many microbial studies in biogas plants. However, current high-throughput sequencing technologies allow a deeper insight of microbial community structure and functioning, shifting the attention on understanding the complex microbial interactions of the biogas production process with the future goal of optimizing the microbial-driven biogas yield. The goal of the study was to unravel the microbial community structure of a biodigester over a time series and its feedstock.
