Systematic Review of IVC Filters and Complications

Systematic review of IVC filters and the associated complications. Original studies from three databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest) were used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IVC filters. Indications for use remain controversial, but there is compelling evidence that IVC filters can be an effective short-term treatment for those at risk of acute PE, particulary in patients contraindicated for anticoagulation therapy. Moreover, retrievable filters show reduce all-cause mortality provided they are removed following the critical period. Complications arise from long-term indwelling and should be avoided.
