Automated Identification of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy using Cardiac Ultrasound imaging: A Systematic Review of Artificial Intelligence Driven Approaches

Left ventricular hypertrophy, LVH is an abnormal condition of the heart, with increased thick heart walls and mass. This is considered to be one of the primary causes of cardiovascular mortality across the globe. There are many causes that leads to LVH and can be diagnosed using multiple imaging modalities, with expert support. This systematic review focus on examining the related studies towards automated identification of diseases characterized by LVH using heart ultra sound images. The focus is primarily on diseases such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, HCM, hypertension, HTN and chronic kidney disease, CKD, for which the echocardiograms looks similar. Thereby the study highlights the need for CAD tools, that detect these diseases, using the echocardiograms. A detailed description on search strategies, inclusion, exclusion criteria, methods from the literature, results and discussions on limitations, future direction etc. are performed in the study.
