This dataset is a list of climate and natural events mentioned in archives since the late 18th century, based on information from the inventories of the French National Archives. Each event is dated and localized. It includes the following fields: event type (a closed list based on terms used in the records), description (as found in archive inventories), department (current French departments plus Algeria), department number, year, location (mentioned municipality if applicable), start date (in YYYY-MM-DD format, though most dates only include month information), end date (in YYYY-MM-DD format), group (the documented set that was inventoried), record URL (link to the record on the National Archives portal), reference code, and unique identifier. The dataset currently covers two document groups: Cathedral Restoration Works in the 19th Century (235 events from 1800-1905, from archives of the former Directorate of Religious Affairs) and Public Calamities (1950-1968, 779 events from archives of the Departmental and Communal Directorate, predecessor of the Directorate General of Local Authorities). It is planned to be updated later with additional inventories. The dataset does not claim to be an exhaustive record of events for any period; it aims to provide dated and localized facts to facilitate the exploitation of other content (e.g., press archives, documents in public archives). For the 1950s and 1960s, only events with multi-document files were included, excluding administrative records on public calamity classifications or endemic events like foot-and-mouth disease.
