Effects of S. mansoni treatment on the human transcriptome

Schistosoma mansoni (Sm) infection has been linked with an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition in women. The biological mechanism underpinning this association is not clear. Therefore, defining the mechanism(s) by which Sm alters on systemic/genital immunology and HIV susceptibility might lead to new strategies for HIV prevention in co-endemic regions. In this project, as part of a clinical trial we analyzed the impact of standard praziquantel therapy in Sm-infected HIV- Ugandan adult women on the peripheral blood mononuclear cell transcriptome.
