This study endeavored to investigate the bacterial and archaeal community and diversity in activated sludge. A total of 17 phyla were detected in wastewater treatment activated sludge. The major phyla or classes were Alphaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes. In the anaerobic sludge, the class Deltaproteobacteria was the most dominant which represented about 77% of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences. Activated sludge was isolated from a wastewater treatment plant; anaerobic sludge from a UASB.
