Constructed Wetland microbial community

In this study we monitored microbial community changes in a constructed wetland in the UK receiving wastewater treatment effluents prior to be discharged into a river. Across different sampling campaigns throughout a year, samples were collected from different areas of the constructed wetland as well as the river upstream and downstream and a pond collecting agricultural run-offs also connected to the river monitored. As part of the project we also monitored the antimicrobial resistance profiles of these microbial communities using high-throughput qPCR and pathogen dispersal through isolation of E. coli.The project results are of high relevance for the implementation of natural based solutions to remediate emergent pollutants in the environment and mitigate further dispersal of antimicrobial resistant pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes in the environment to tackle the antimicrobial resistance crisis.
