Triticum aestivum L. an important cereal food crop providing basic staple food for major civilization of world. Even though it is moderately salt tolerant, there are reports of crop yield losses under salinity stress. Triticum aestivum cultivar Kharchia local, a salt tolerant wheat landrace, native to saline- sodic soils of Rajasthan, developed through a selection from farmer's field. Investigating the mechanisms and pathways involved in salinity-tolerance of wheat could facilitate better understanding of the molecular basis of salinity response and therefore enable the effective use of genetic and genomic approaches to improve salinity tolerance in major cultivated crops.
