Five hundred patients with COVID-19 confirmed by
RT-PCR in nasopharyngeal exudate were included in the study.
These patients required ICU, internal medicine or pulmonology hospitalization
in the Hospital Clinic o Barcelona between March and June 2020. The clinical and laboratory
data that we collected in our database were the first available information of
the patient within the 48 hours
after admission. The variables included
were: age, sex, smoking and drinking habits, asthma, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, obesity,
hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, hospitalization days,
intensive care unit stay, and in-hospital death.
Blood samples
were collected into lithium heparin-
, EDTA and citrate-coated blood collection tubes for biochemical, hematological
and coagulation testing, respectively. Alkaline phosphatase
(ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total
bilirubin (TBIL), creatinine (CREA), ferritin (FER), gamma-glutamyl
transpeptidase (GGT), glucose (GLU), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive
protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and troponin I (TNI), were measured using
an Atellica automated analyzer (Siemens Healthineers, Tarrytown, NY, USA). Hematological parameters (including hemoglobin (HB)
and platelets (PLT), leukocytes (LEU), lymphocytes (LYMP), and neutrophils (NEU)
count), were analyzed using an Advia 2120 (Siemens
Healthineers, Tarrytown, NY, USA). Finally, the Sysmex 5100 (Sysmex, Kobe,
Japan) was used for d-dimer (DD), prothrombin time (PT) and partial
thromboplastin time (PTT) analysis.
