24-28 John Street, Southampton, Hampshire. Archaeological Evaluation (OASIS ID: cotswold2-306265)

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in February 2017 at 24-28 John Street, Southampton, Hampshire. Three trenches were excavated. A possible pit or ditch of Saxon date was identified in Trench 2. Environmental evidence indicates that this feature is likely to be Saxon in date and represents dispersed settlement activity within or near the site. No indication of any marsh land in the vicinity of the site was identified from the environmental evidence. The three excavated trenches recorded extensive evidence of the construction and demolition of brick built houses in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Ordnance Survey mapping shows that the terraced houses were already extant in 1870 and were demolished sometime between 1969 and 1973.
