Dataset for “Research roles and responsibilities at United States universities, as seen in institutional data management policies”

This dataset contains a list of doctoral universities with very high research activity (R1 universities according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education), and links to their institution research data management policies, as of September 2022. To be included in this study these policies must comply with 2 requirements (1) they are standalone policies, focused on research data and (2) they are university-wide, issued and administered by the university's administration. A total of 50 institutions, and their respective policies, have been identified. The text of the policies has been analyzed using a content analysis methodology to inquire about the roles and responsibilities that these policies assign to the researchers and the institutions. For that purpose, we have defined 36 criteria that characterize the policy (e.g. title, date of current version, etc) and capture the described responsibilities (e.g. data steward is responsible for data retention and/or preservation). This dataset includes a list of the criteria with instructions on how to evaluate policies for that criteria. Each of the criteria has been evaluated for each of the policies as being present with clear language, present with vague language, or not present. Two tabular files are included in this dataset with this information. One of the files includes, in addition to the coding, the text of the policy that justifies the determination, as recorded by each of the researchers.
