Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a cause of food poisoning accompanied with gut inflammation. To cause disease, the pathogen has to colonize the gut lumen by outcompeting the microbiota. However, the infectious stage is still poorly understood. Recent work has shown that luminal fatty acids act as a signal that regulates the Salmonella gut colonization. Thus, this study will facilitate establishing a link between the Salmonella gut infection and fatty acid metabolism by this pathogen.
