Research progress on the biosynthesis mechanism and influencing factors of algae-derived odor compounds

The increasing prevalence of odor problems in drinking water poses significant global challenges to water safety. Odor-producing algae are crucial factors influencing the odor compound concentration in water bodies. This article reviews relevant literature to summarize the occurrence of typical odorous events and the compounds in drinking water, attributed primarily to odor-producing algae. The odor-production mechanisms during the lifecycle of odor-producing algae were discussed mainly, with particular emphasis on the effects of various environmental factors on two typical odor compounds, 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin. Finally, the article proposed directions for future research to reduce odors in water bodies and outlined future research directions to support water quality management.
