FABLE's Worldwide 50km Grid of National, Subnational, and Agroclimatic Classifications

This dataset provides a global 50km resolution grid that assigns geospatial, administrative, and agroclimatic attributes to each cell. The grid spans all terrestrial countries and territories, with each cell containing information about the country it belongs to, the first-level administrative unit (Admin-1) it intersects most, and agroclimatic classifications based on the FAO Global Agro-Ecological Zones (GAEZ) framework. Additional ecological and biogeographic classifications are also included. This dataset is intended to support global-scale spatial analysis and modeling efforts in the fields of land use, agriculture, climate, and development planning, particularly through the use of FABLE's Zonal Statistics Extractor tool. This tool generates zonal statistics for different data sources, which are reduced into the grid cells described here. For area comparability, the grid is created in the equal-area Mollweide projection, with which cell areas are calculated. The resulting grid and its cell's centroid's coordinates are provided in WGS-84. Data is provided here in three different formats: geopackage (.gpkg), zipped shapefile (.shp), and comma separated values (.csv). Variable Definitions Variable Description id Unique numeric identifier for each grid cell before applying the country border intersection. id_c Unique text identifier building on id, with cells broken into multiple irregular parts to comply with country administrative borders. iso3 ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country code. name Full name of the country or territory. region Broad global region or subregion grouping (e.g., "Eastern Europe"). zone Agro-ecological zone classification (FAO GAEZ), representing combined thermal and moisture characteristics. thermal Thermal classification derived from FAO GAEZ, representing temperature regimes. admin1 Unique identifier for the Admin-1 region (first-level subnational division) with the largest spatial intersection with the cell. adm1_name Name of the Admin-1 region. area Grid cell area in hectares.
