Lens culinaris is an important crop throughout Western Asia and Northern Africa, the Indian subcontinent and North America. This is because lentil is a important source of dietary proteins for humans as well as animals. Also the crop is used in the management of soil fertility. One of the major constraints is the fusarium vascular wilt, a soil-borne pathogen. The most economic method of managing this disease is by cultivating resistant varieties. Thus having a genetic map is the essential first step. There are two maps: the first to generate the framework loci on the linkage groups, the second to identify a locus conferring resistance to fusarium vascular wilt.
